Citizen Cafe Facilitation Training

February 9, 2018
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

John Jay College
524 West 59th Street
Room 520.28 Haaren Hall

Living in a democracy, it is easy to be impatient, frustrated and even cynical about its failings. But consider this: What would it really mean for us to live in a non-democratic society with no independent courts and human rights agencies? What if there were no newspapers or TV stations to challenge a despot? What if disputes were always settled by whoever was most powerful?

Citizen Café is a project of Citizen Demos. These facilitated dialogues are designed to nurture a reflective citizenry and a robust culture of democracy. Citizen Demos now offers facilitation training for Citizen Café conversations. Join our cadre of facilitators to be in the forefront of strengthening and protecting our democracy.

Facilitated by Ashok Panikkar, Founder Meta-Culture

Because there is a crisis of democracy and we cannot wait for someone else to protect our political system

At this workshop, participants will learn how to:
1.     Discuss what the crisis tells us about our own society and its vulnerabilities
2.     Identify key values, skills and dispositions necessary for a democratic culture
3.     Design and convene a Citizen Café in their neighborhood or workplace
4.     Facilitate reflective and deliberative conversations

This all-day workshop is free to members of ACR-GNY, Mediators Beyond Borders International, and the community of staff, faculty, students and alumni of John Jay College.
