STORIES MEDIATORS TELL

Stories are powerful!  Their capacity to engage listeners and to generate understanding is immense.   Stories may be an important element in allowing a broader understanding of the mediation process.  Editor of Stories Mediators Tell and veteran mediator Lela Love will talk about the importance of stories and will provide a few engaging narratives to get the session started.

New York Peace Institute’s Glen Parker, also a veteran mediator, will serve as moderator and will invite participants to tell stories about a case (or a fictionalized version of a case if confidentiality requires) designed to make a point regarding mediation's potential to shift parties towards more constructive engagement with one another or, perhaps, to serve as a cautionary tale about mediation’s destructive capacity.  An opportunity for audience questions and interactions will follow each story.

LELA PORTER LOVE is Professor of Law and Director of the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (NYC).  Lela regularly conducts mediation and arbitration training programs, teaching both nationally and internationally, and has an active practice as a neutral, ranging from community disputes to complex litigated matters.  She has written widely on the topic of dispute resolution, including three law school textbooks, and mediated a simulated product liability dispute for COURT TV.  Her newest book, co-edited with Eric Galton, is Stories Mediator Tell, a best seller of the ABA Dispute Resolution Section.  She has also authored with Joseph Stulberg,  The Middle Voice: Mediating Conflict Successfully, 2^nd ed.  She is the Past Chair of the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution.

GLEN PARKER, the Civil Court Coordinator for Manhattan at New York Peace Institute, oversees NYPI's delivery of services in the Civil and Small Claims courts of Lower Manhattan and Harlem. Glen is also the Lemon Law Arbitration Coordinator for New York County. Since becoming a mediator in 2009, Glen has been involved in numerous projects in the field of ADR, including assisting the New York State Division of Human Rights to develop a mediation program for their cases and being a part of the Mediation Working Group at Occupy Wall Street. He is an adjunct professor at Cardozo School of Law and is on the Board of Directors of the Association for Conflict Resolution of Greater New York, for which he serves as a co-chair for this year’s annual conference.
