Dr. Waheguru Pal Sidhu will explore the profound nuclear dangers posed by Russia's latest invasion of Ukraine, highlighting four critical risks. First, the potential use of nuclear weapons poses a grave threat, whether through deliberate action, misunderstanding, or accident, breaking a seven-decade taboo. Second, arms control efforts may be irreversibly damaged, with the US, Russia, and China unlikely to engage in future agreements regardless of the war's outcome. Third, the invasion undermines non-proliferation efforts, as Russia's violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum may encourage nuclear-armed states to retain their arsenals and others to seek them. Lastly, the threat to civilian nuclear power plants, exemplified by the unprecedented seizure of Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia by Russian troops, raises significant safety concerns. This talk will address these contemporary challenges to the international regime for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as efforts to overcome them.
The discussion will be moderated by ACR-GNY President-elect Nick Pozek.
