UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF EUROPEAN MEDIATION:

From old Greek legends to Winnie-the-Pooh

DR. MARTIN SVATOS

Despite the fact that the legal framework favours it, cross-border mediation is not easy in Europe. An extreme diversity of approaches exists today towards the consensual dispute resolution process. Those approaches are based on specific local experiences and traditions. How can these dissimilarities be tackled by one single mediator, specially when she or he comes from overseas?

No matter whether you are mediating in common law countries where mediation has a long tradition or in the southern hot-tempered Mediterranean countries, you can find clues from the rich and inspiring European cultures to help you overcome apparent challenges.

In this interactive seminar, Dr. Svatos will review different chapters of European culture that can help us overcome the most difficult mediation challenges. From the ancient Greek legends to Winnie-the-Pooh, he will look for inspiration to overcome impasses, shape opening statements and win parties' trust.

Dr. Martin Svatos is a leading Czech mediator and arbitrator. He has mediated more than 100 international and domestic cases. His experiences in ADR were recognized when he became the Secretary to the Working group of the ICC Czech Republic for Mediation. He is an arbitrator for the Vienna International Arbitration Centre, a mediator registered by the Czech Republic Ministry of Justice, Lecturer at the Charles University in Prague, the Urbino European Law Seminar, the Universite des Antilles in Guadeloupe and Shanghai University of Finance and Economy. He regularly contributes to the Kluwer Mediator Blog and Czech Radio Collective and he is a Labour Mediator and Arbitrator registered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Dr. Svatos has spoken at international conferences in Prague, Thessaloniki, Dublin, Istanbul, Warsaw and Shanghai.
