He combines law with an Alternative Dispute Resolution practice focusing on mediation and arbitration. Much (but not all) of his work, as lawyer and ADR neutral, is in the fields of commercial and real estate disputes; business transactions; divorce and family law; labor and employment; wage-and-hour; and information technology. Mr. Newman was Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Metaserver, Inc., in New Haven, an Internet middleware software and services company, which leveraged technology first conceived at Yale University.

As a mediator, Mr. Newman is a member, for example, of the Panel of Neutrals for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; the NYS Supreme Court, Bronx, New York and Queens Counties' Commercial Divisions; and the NYS Supreme Court matrimonial mediation programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. He is on the panel of mediators of the Bronx County Supreme and Surrogate's Courts. He has been an arbitrator for the New York City Civil Court in Manhattan for many years. He volunteers as a community dispute mediator at the New York Center for Interpersonal Development.

Mr. Newman was an adjunct clinical instructor at Columbia Law School (employment mediation).

He is the Chair of the New York City Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. He is a past-member of the Boards of Directors of the Association for Conflict Resolution of Greater New York and of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association's House of Delegates; the NYSBA Family Law Section; the NYSBA's Dispute Resolution Section, including its Executive Committee (ex officio) and Committees on Mediation and Negotiation; and of the NYSBA's Commercial and Federal Litigation Section. He is a former member of the Education Committees of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York and of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. Mr. Newman co-convenes the “Roundtable Breakfasts,” the ACR-GNY/CUNY Dispute Resolution Center speakers program that routinely draws hundreds of participants to its monthly meetings.
